Star Trek Beyond Review

I went into this new installment of this rebooted movie series expecting a fun summer action adventure. In all honesty, I am not the biggest fan of the past two films. It is not that I find them subpar. I just never had much interest or excitement for them. After positive reviews began to flow in and I heard rumblings that the film does such a great job of appeasing new and old fans, I thought this might be the movie that hooks me to the franchise. Unfortunately, although a solid summer blockbuster, this wasn't the one to do it. It's a fun and thrilling space adventure that is meant for the big screen. However, I found myself questioning whether or not I will ever revisit  Justin Lin's new installment. Like I said before, I had fun with the film and connected with all the characters. Three plot issues ruined my enjoyment of certain sections. First, was the alien creature that comes to the federation to ask for assistance on a ship wreckage. It seemed convenient that Captain Kirk and the federation chose to immediately believe her story and invest in an unplanned voyage to help someone they didn't know. Second, was the realization that Krall was Captain Edison. Zoe Saldana's character casually passes by a monitor and immediately recognizes Edison as Krall, who in my opinion looks nothing like Idris Elba when in his alien form. Lastly, was Krall's motives. I did not completely understand the motivation that was given for him. Additionally, I felt that it came way too late in the film and caused him to come off as a very underdeveloped and generic villain. In light of these problems, I would still recommend the movie. I give it a B-
