Hell Or High Water(Spoiler Free)

Hell or High Water was a movie that came out of nowhere for me. Even when its a limited run or low budget film I'll hear or read a few things about it long before the release. In this case, I saw the trailer and a few weeks later it was in theatres. I couldn't avoid the influx of positive things critics and fans had to say about this neo-noir western. I have to admit... the trailer really didn't grab me whatsoever. Often times even if critics give something amazing reviews I remain skeptical. I am finding more and more times when I walk out of the theatre scratching my head as to why something has a 90+% on the tomatometer. Hell or High Water seemed to be a bit of a different case. Don't get me wrong... I was still going into the movie with some reservations but the general public's overwhelmingly positive response to it kept me hopeful. So what did I think!! Well it was eh. Not bad. Not great. From a technical standpoint, it succeeds completely. Great acting, great cinematography, great realism. However, these things do not always create a memorable result. I see the rewatchability of something as an essential element. How could a movie be that good if I don't want to ever see it again? I'm not talking about a Schindler's List whose heavy subject matter makes it difficult to stomach. I'm looking at it from how gripping or entertaining it is. I'll probably never revisit Hell or High Water. I respect a lot about it. The moral ambiguity the film addresses is handled textbook perfectly. The climax is high stakes and emotional. The film is pretty slow which is usually a deal breaker for me but in this case it managed to keep me engaged in how the story would unravel. However, now that I've seen the finish line I don't think I have any interest in taking another lap around the track. Plus, excluding the climax, I wasn't too emotionally attached to any character or aspect of the film. I will say that there is some unexpected humor in the movie that fits and is actually funny. I wanted to buy into the hype of this movie but I just can't. I'm glad I saw it but I'd recommend waiting to rent it. Purely based on its technical achievements and the positives I discussed I give it a B.
