What Pisses Me Off About Movie Audiences

I could be wrong but it seems to me that audiences are starting to get tired of what Hollywood has been putting out recently. With the countless number of franchises we have nowadays, most people look at the industry as lacking creativity. Again, I may be getting the wrong impression but I feel audiences are frustrated. They feel that film is turning more and more into a business that is getting lazy, relying on their past successes. However, the thing that is incredibly frustrating is that Hollywood is putting out what audiences are craving for. The problem is, nobody is going out to see them. Just as a lot of people say Hollywood is getting lazy, fans are too. It takes some time and effort to research what films are coming out and what looks good and may interest you. For example, some of my most anticipated movies for the rest of the year include All the Money in the World, Molly’s Game, and I, Tonya. I’d be willing to bet that the majority of you haven’t heard of most, if not all of those movies. It doesn’t take much time to find out about these releases and decided based on the story, talent behind it, and trailer if the movie interests you. I guarantee that the amount of times you walk out of the theatre satisfied will increase by a lot. Otherwise, you’re not going to hear about some of these movies until they’ve left theaters. The reason that’s frustrating is because it means the films are going to suffer mediocre box office results and at the end of the day, Hollywood is a business. Money is what talks. Bad box office means studios will be less willing to take risks on these original properties. The thing that prompted me to write about this was Blade Runner 2049’s disappointing first weekend box office results. I didn’t write a review on the film yet because it’s something I really need to sit on. That being said, the movie is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s epic, visually stunning(I mean absolutely beautiful), and extremely creative. My bet is that it’s going to be a classic(I know it’s way too soon to call). Plus, director Denis Villeneuve is batting 100% with films like Prisoners and Sicario. He deserves to have success and become a household name. If a movie so ambitious like that doesn’t get results but a run of the mill film based off an already existing franchise make millions of dollars, why would studios pick to fund lots of original projects. Now, I know Blade Runner is a franchise in a way but it’s not like a Star Wars or Batman and after you see the movie, you’ll see it doesn’t feel like a franchise film at all. I was hoping the success of movies like Baby Driver and Dunkirk indicated a trend in the right direction. Now, I’m not so sure. Just do your research and you’ll be glad you did.
