MoviePass Review

Just pay a $9.99 monthly subscription fee to see one movie a day? Sounds too good to be true? Well… with MoviePass it’s not!!! Now, there are a few stipulations attached to this ridiculously fantastic deal. There are certain restrictions like the inability to see a movie twice, or buy tickets in advance online, or see movies in 3D. Additionally, not every theatre accepts MoviePass. Regardless, it seems like a pretty good deal right?

With any deal that sounds so good, you’re always waiting to find out about that one, sneaky thing that makes something that seemed so great turn into something that ends up sucking. However, to my surprise, I haven’t found that to be the case with MoviePass. It’s a shockingly great deal and works exactly as advertised.

How does this mysterious card work? Basically, you sign up for the subscription service and then you get a card that’s unique to your account (it can take a while to get the card in the mail). Then, you go onto your phone and download the MoviePass app and log onto your profile. From then on, your MoviePass card is essentially a really picky credit card. What I mean by that, is that it’s essentially the same as your everyday Visa except you can only use it to purchase movie tickets at the approved theaters. In my area, I’ve found that almost every theatre accepts the card. When you get within 100 yards of the theatre you’re going to, you check in on your app to the specific movie you want to see. By doing this, the exact amount of money for the ticket gets loaded onto your card and from the theatre’s perspective, you’re essentially paying with a regular credit card and paying them full price for the ticket.

The place where I expected MoviePass to fail was the app. I thought it would be hard to use, crash constantly, and make it not worth the effort. Luckily, the app is really intuitive and I’ve never had a problem being able to check in. Whenever I go to a theatre that accepts the card (which is almost always) I’ve always been able to use MoviePass. What about some of the other restrictions for the pass? Well… 3D movie going is annoying and terrible so that’s not an issue. Do you really need to see a movie twice in theaters? As I said before, almost all the theaters in my area accept the pass. The advanced ticket buying has also not been an issue for me. If it’s really crowded, I just go to the theatre earlier the same day of the showing and buy my tickets at the kiosk. I’ve even been able to find a solution to seeing a movie more than once. I simply find a movie that’s also playing, that I have no interest in ever seeing and I check in and buy my ticket as if I’m going to see that movie.

MoviePass is a great investment for most people. To me, it’s the best thing since sliced bread. If you enjoy the movie going experience and usually go at least a couple of times a month, the subscription fee is more than worth it. You’ll find yourself having a lot more freedom going to the theatre. You can go to movies you’re on the fence about and see an absolute train wreck without any regrets. MoviePass gets a big two thumbs up.
