Blank Check with Griffin and David

These guys have a competitive advantage. They are #thetwofriends(if you listen you’ll get the reference). Griffin Newman(who is actually the star of the Amazon show The Tick) and David Sims(film critic at The Atlantic) have some of the best on mic chemistry around. Essentially, the group started doing Star Wars reviews and evolved into a podcast looking into the careers of famous movie directors. Each miniseries focuses on someone who came out of the gate swinging and got whatever budget they wanted(a blank check) to make their passion project. They have such off the wall humor and plenty of inside jokes that really make the whole experience feel like  you’re part of a community. Their producer, Ben, is also hilarious. Again, they’re very quirky but I think they really make it work. Plus, I find their movie opinions to always be very unique and I never can pin point what side they’re going to fall on for any given movie. It keeps things unexpected exciting! Plus, whenever any director that they’ve previously covered releases a new movie, they make sure to review it.

The Top Ten Show

Again a duo with amazing on mic chemistry. Matt Knost and John Rocha have definitely found a winning formula. Matt Knost seems like just the coolest dude. The typical guy you’d love to hang out with. John Rocha’s love and passion for film is infectious and even if he says some insane things sometimes, he’s not afraid to push the boundaries and talk about some very important and personal subjects. What these guys do is pick a topic every week and make a list of their top 10 films in that category. At the end, they combine their two lists into one top ten. Their end negotiations trying to get their movie in over the other’s is pretty entertaining to listen to. Two really nice guys that are highly entertaining with a great concept.

Comedy Film Nerds

Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini have really created something special with their Comedy Film Nerds site. These two are both professional comedians so they can be absolutely hilarious. I’d say this is the duo who’s film taste lines up the least with mine but I still always enjoy tuning in every week. Basically they just run down and review the week that was in film wether it be theatrical releases, dvd releases, or movie trailers. You can even go onto the app store and buy their app for $2.99. It gives you their entire archive of all their 424 episodes since they started in 2011. Another duo that just knows how to make a good podcast.

The Cine-Files

This is probably the podcast that looks at film as a true art. It’s trying to really delve into the discipline of film and what goes behind making one. John Rocha is back for this one with is film professor friend Steve Morris. Any movie that’s over 10 years old is open to this pair. It’s more of a podcast that looks at classic films and talks all about how it was made as well as John and Steve’s opinion of it. You’ll learn a ton about film history and once again have a great time listening.
